Youth Development Programme is off to a great start

There’s a real buzz at Hope Skills Centre, with great excitement for Hope4Malawi’s new Youth Development Programme. Launched in September 2024, the faith-based programme brings hope and opportunity to the rural community, enabling school leavers to gain essential life, academic, business and workplace skills.

The one-year holistic programme helps young people prepare for adulthood by teaching them to develop economic independence, social competence, character and faith.

On 9th September, 40 local school leavers awaiting final exam results attended a two-week Youth Development Programme taster course. It was the perfect opportunity to share vision and values and discuss significant issues like overcoming poverty.

Everyone enjoyed the team-building games and skills presentations and drew strength from worship.

High on the agenda was how to bring about sustainable change, focusing on literacy in school, farming organically using compost and planting trees.

The Christian Life is a key section of the Youth Development programme. Lively discussions were held on the benefits of building Christian character and positive, trusting relationships, reducing poverty and resolving conflict.

Another key strand of the programme involves empowering young people to achieve a secure livelihood. Time was spent thinking about social enterprise and how to develop the community and an income.

Nurturing the students’ interests and talents enables them to become influencers, and enhancing skills can increase connections to their communities.

The students’ creative ideas included drying mangos, using plastics for irrigation, and planting trees. Watch this space as they plan to set up youth clubs in their villages to implement their ideas.
