What a difference a school makes

It’s a milestone year for Hope Secondary, as the school’s first 49 students to reach Year 4 graduate from secondary education after completing their final National Government exams.

The school has a significant impact by giving young men and women the opportunity to gain a secondary education, which most would not have had. Out of the 1,500 students sitting the District mock examinations, Hope Secondary had six students in the top 50, with only students from boarding schools or larger schools ahead of them. What an achievement.

To prepare for the examinations, Hope4Malawi provided the school with laboratory equipment. Plus, the resources to develop practical skills in all the sciences, including agriculture, and revision resources. All the students worked very hard leading up to the examinations and we are hoping the results, to be released in October, will be just as encouraging as the mocks.

Hope4Malawi is grateful to the 65 sponsors across all year groups at Hope Secondary who make such a difference. They support individual students and enable us to provide educational resources to every student in the school.

So, what's next for the Hope students?

Many have applied to be the first students to attend the new Youth Development Programme at Hope Skills Centre. Staff at the Skills Centre are currently working through the applications and we will select 30 students for the first course, which will start in September and run for three terms.

During the year students will consider the causes of poverty and how to develop the skills to become change-makers in their communities. Skills training will cover new farming methods, computer skills and house building. Hands-on work experience will include working with school children, making clothes, and building stoves.

Hope4Malawi is looking forward to welcoming the students to the Skills Centre along with the trainers and facilitators from the UK and Malawi.
