The Ufulu (Freedom) programme was launched at two of Hope4Malawi’s partner schools –Chimwembe Primary and Chipwepwete Primary – at the end of 2024. Initial discussions with teachers, parents and local chiefs led to community support.

The annual programme consists of 12 sessions, held twice a week after school, and is delivered by a fully trained local team from Hope Skills Centre, with assistance from Youth Development Programme students on work placements.

The course is run in English, as children in this age group are taught in English at school, although this is often translated for clarity.  This proved a success at Chimwembe and Chipwepwete Primary Schools. The children’s understanding of English improved, and they gained the confidence to use it in conversation.

One of the course sections focuses on sexual and reproductive health. Along with training advice, reusable sanitary pads are provided for girls who have reached puberty. They are encouraged to attend school during their menstrual cycle to avoid missing lessons.

This remains a priority for the team, who will revisit the schools to follow up on progress.

From feedback, many children enjoyed the course, and their teachers were positive about its physical and spiritual content.

The Ufulu programme will soon be introduced at two additional Hope4Malawi partner schools: Mafunde Primary and Tapani Primary.

Many children attend school hungry, so students receive an after-school snack to encourage them to stay for the session.
