Hope4Malawi’s new Ufulu programme (Freedom in Chichewa) is set to play a crucial role in enabling primary learners to live healthier and happier lives. The 12-session course targets girls and boys aged 11 to 14 and focuses on physical, mental, and reproductive health and wellbeing.
It’s about making a difference for pre-teen and teenage girls and boys, giving them the confidence to thrive, fulfil their potential, gain an education, and live healthily.
Adolescent girls face many barriers to education, including cultural and gender inequality. Many drop out of school due to family pressures or early marriage. This course brings girls and boys together to understand the importance of education and how this will lead to a brighter future.
“Ufulu is a good name for the programme as we want to bring freedom to the local area,” says Charis Miles, who has worked on developing and delivering the curriculum.
Split into four sections, the course promotes health and wellbeing through interactive activities, case discussions, collaborative projects, and discovery learning. This covers key areas such as gender equality, promoting girls’ empowerment, building relationships with others, emotions, and body health, supported by Bible studies.
This course strongly emphasises youth engagement, empowering young people with knowledge and the tools to make healthy choices.
Two of Hope4Malawi's partner primary schools have already completed the course. Find out about future plans in our next blog.
